MY FAVORITE GO-TO SUPERFOOD SMOOTHIE!
IF YOU KNOW ME, YOU MAY KNOW THAT IT’S NO SECRET THAT I USUALLY OPT FOR MEALS THAT REQUIRE A CHAIR, FORK, KNIFE, SPOON AND FAMILY & FRIENDS, BUT I LOVE A HEALTHY SMOOTHIE TOO!
I love a smoothie especially on those days that I don’t feel like eating much of anything, am on the go, or am having a rough day and sugar or other refined options would satisfy me short term, but I know will not fuel my brain for optimal function.
This superfood smoothie is my go-to in a pinch, post workout or on the way to the office (which happens to just be down the hallway) to fuel for my brain when time, emotions, (thanks 40 year old hormones) or just life kick you in the lady bits and the only energy I have is to throw everything together and blend!
PLUS the excuse to take it to the Studio where it will make it’s debut for it’s close up makes this food photographer oh so happy and is always on the forefront of my mind too! (PS, wish you could take better photos of your food for your marketing content too? Keep reading till the end! xoxo
I am SO excited to share this recipe with you that I drink at least once if not more pretty much every week. This creamy, dreamy smoothie is made with banana, blueberries, blackberries, flax seed, a full cup of spinach, almond milk, and scoop of collagen and vanilla protein powder to kick the day off.
And if I forget to buy frozen berries and have to have avocado toast for breakfast instead I am NOT sad about that either way. (plus avo toast makes for a beautiful shot in the Studio too, duh!)
There is power in fueling your body with the foods that not only fill you up, fuel you with nutrients, gives you satisfaction BUT also helps in the function of your brain and body too! But, that didn’t always come easy to me either.
As a kid and teen, I ate and drank whatever I wanted, like most kids do. It wasn’t until my 30s when I cared more about the productivity of my days, the mood I was in, how I showed up for my kids, my husband and my job (or didn’t show up) that I noticed there’s more to this whole optimal life than blaming it on just a “bad day.”
I concocted this smoothie recipe a little over a year ago and have been making it weekly ever since. After research on myself, brain health and lots and lots of trial and error over the better part of a decade, I decided my body and brain like it when I treat it right, and that means eating foods that like me and I like them back!
THE BODY KEEPS THE SCORE!
Do you experiment on yourself too? Do you make sure you get the nutrients you need so that you can feel your best, from the top down? Smoothies are one of the BEST ways to maintain my busy Mom of 2, life as a Creative Director, food photographer and wife to the most amazing man to make my day a success! Not to mention the benefits of a valuable night sleep too, now more in my 40s more now than ever, smoothies help me in all. the ways. I want to know your fave recipes too, share them with me, find me on IG and let’s chat!!
If you’re looking to add even more nutrition, sometimes I’ll add in chia seeds, flax, or other matcha protein powder to give this smoothie an extra boost.
But the recipe without any additions, packs 22 grams of protein, 10 grams of fiber, 97% of our vitamin C, and 24% of our iron. It’ll keep you full all morning long and help you get in all your vitamins and minerals in the morning.
Then you can eat chocolate chip cookies for lunch and not feel so bad about it 🙂
A DRINKABLE BLEND OF FRUITS AND VEGGIES
This post isn’t sponsored by Vital Proteins–but I am just seriously obsessed with their collagen powder. I’ve been taking collagen for the 5 or so years years for all it’s amazing healthy benefits and this collagen powder if seriously my favorite, I hear they have a matcha I might have to try too… mmm…
So save that $12 on an overpriced smoothie from a juice bar and make this superfood smoothie instead. Then you can have a smoothie that is, dare I say better than a store bought one AND buy clothes, photo props, camera supplies or whatever your heart desires instead!
A win win in my book.
INGREDIENTS
1/4 cup almond milk or 8 oz. coconut water (milk gives it more of a smoother texture)
1/4 avocado
1/2 frozen banana
1/2 cup berries (I used blueberries and blackberries)
1 tsp flaxseed
1 cup spinach
1 scoop Vital Protein Collagen Peptides
INSTRUCTIONS
Add all ingredients PLUS 1 cup ice, into a blender and blend until smooth. If the smoothie is too thick, add more almond milk.
Pour into glass and enjoy!
Don’t forget to photography it before you’re tempted to scarf it down!
